Why Knicks won’t repeat as NBA champions after ending 53-year drought

The New York Knicks are NBA Champions for the first time in 53 years, ending one of the longest championship droughts in all of pro sports. For a dedicated fan base like New York City, most fans witnessed a Knicks’ championship for the firs time in their lives and they’re hoping they don’t have to wait another 53 years for the next title. However, with expectations already high for next season, repeating as NBA champions could be much more difficult for the Knicks than anticipated.

The Knicks recorded one of the most dominant NBA postseasons of all-time, going 16-3 to tie the second-best playoff record set by an NBA team while posting a +283 point differential, the most all-time in the playoffs. Their 4-1 win over the San Antonio Spurs was also more dominant than expected as the Knicks were an afterthought to win the Finals behind teams like the Thunder, Spurs, Pistons, Celtics, and Cavs.

With their core group of starters – Brunson, Towns, Bridges, Hart, Anunoby – all under contract for next season, the Knicks will have a great chance to replicate their regular season success while potentially making another deep run in next year’s playoffs. However, just three other players are under contract and the Knicks will have some tough decisions to make surrounding their supporting cast that made them so dominant during these playoffs. Come next season, it’s more than likely we see a new Knicks’ bench that changes the overall dynamic of the team.

When analyzing way-too-early odds to win the NBA championship in 2026-27, the San Antonio Spurs come in as favorites to avenge their Finals loss at +250 odds, +145 to win the Western Conference. The Oklahoma City Thunder are expected to continue their dominance at +260 odds to win the championship next year, followed closely by the Boston Celtics at +550 to win it all, +190 to win the Western Conference.

The Knicks are listed with the fourth-best odds at +650 as the Eastern Conference will most likely be determined by them and the Boston Celtics. Boston’s early playoff exit was notable in more ways than one, but we can expect a much more cohesive unit next season with Jayson Tatum returning to his full role with the team.

Furthermore, the Spurs have exceeded all expectations for how quickly they’ve developed around Victor Wembanyama in such a short amount of time, so it’s likely that both them and the Oklahoma City Thunder will be in the mix competing for championships on a yearly basis. While the Knicks were dominant in facing the Eastern Conference during the playoffs, they went a combined 2-3 against the Spurs and Thunder during the regular season and will only have greater challenges the more each young core continues to develop.

History isn’t necessarily on the Knicks’ side either as the last eight consecutive NBA Champions have all been different teams, not seeing back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors did it in 2017 and 2018. During the last 10 years, three other teams (Cavs, Celtics, Heat) have made it to multiple NBA Finals while failing to repeat as champions. Given this new age in the NBA with players and rosters improving at rapid rates, the competition to emerge from the Eastern Conference will only grow heavier with time.

Still, the saving grace for the Knicks is their supreme confidence behind leader Jalen Brunson and their attitude that no challenge is big enough for them to not have a chance at overcoming. Their dominant playoff run certainly left more to be desired as they were able to flip a switch when it came time for the playoffs, so the Knicks certainly make an interesting case for being favorites to win it all again next season. Alas, this is easier said than done and Knicks fans will begin another waiting game until they can lift the trophy once again.
