Why Georgia, Florida State just nuked home-and-home, with a catch

Teams schedule games well into the future. Georgia and Florida State are no different. Still, circumstances can change, such as the SEC announcing a new 9-game conference schedule.

As changes happen, sometimes big non-conference match-ups get the axe, and that is what has happened here, according to Nicole Auerbach of NBCSports.

“Florida State and Georgia have canceled their 2027/2028 home-and-home series. They say they hope to play a neutral-site matchup ‘soon,'” Auerbach posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The initial agreement to play was made in 2019, with Florida State hosting the game in September 2027 and Georgia hosting in September 2028. At the time, the schools seemed excited to play each other.

“We are excited to announce this series and showcase our commitment to providing games in Doak Campbell Stadium that will be attractive for our fans,” interim director of athletics David Coburn said. “Our non-conference schedule is among the strongest in the country with an annual game against Florida in addition to regular matchups with Notre Dame, and this series with Georgia fits the criteria for how we want to build future schedules. I also want to thank Coach Taggart for his commitment to facing high-quality opponents that will excite fans and continue to strengthen Florida State’s place among the preeminent programs in the country.”

At the time, David Coburn was the athletic director, but current AD Michael Alford realized that keeping the match-up was not an option.

“As we considered the effects of evolving scheduling mandates within both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference, we have mutually agreed that it is in the best interest of both schools to cancel our home-and-home series scheduled for 2027 and 2028,” FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford said. “We are now discussing playing a future neutral-site contest, and we are optimistic we will get that done. Importantly, this change will not reduce the total home games on our schedule moving forward.”

Georgia now only has Georgia Tech on the non-conference schedule for 2027, and Georgia Tech and Florida A&M in 2028. Florida State has games against ETSU and Florida for 2027, but just Florida in 2028. They will also renew their rivalry with Notre Dame in 2029.
