Why Celtics will destroy 76ers in 5 games in 2026 NBA Playoffs

The Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers are resuming hostilities this spring in the NBA playoffs, and that’s a familiar and secure event for long-time basketball fans. Theis marks the 23rd time Boston and Philadelphia have met in the NBA playoffs, and the Celtics hold a decisive 15-7 edge in the series. The 76ers have not beaten the Celtics in the playoffs since 1982 and the Celtics have won the last seven matchups.

That’s history, and the current matchup is one that should go in the Celtics’ direction once again. Boston was supposed to be a team that had to feel its way this season because it could not depend on superstar Jayson Tatum for a large majority of the season. However, Jaylen Brown stepped into the void and made himself a legitimate MVP candidate and he led the Celtics (56-26) to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference behind the Detroit Pistons.

The 76ers had a comparatively mediocre season, and they landed in the Play-In tournament as the No. 7 seed with a 45-37 record. There’s no doubt that the 76ers have talent with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid leading the way, but there is something missing when it comes to executing on a consistent basis and coming through when the game is on the line.

Celtics come into playoffs without any distractions

The Celtics come into this year’s playoffs with redemption on their minds. After winning the NBA title two years ago with a five-game triumph over the Dallas Mavericks, the Celtics suffered a brutal loss in the second round of the playoffs to the New York Knicks a year ago.

Tatum suffered a torn Achilles in Game 4 of that series and that injury ensured their downfall, but the Celtics had suffered two brutal home meltdowns in Games 1 and 2 prior to the injury. The Celtics are not about to let those kinds of losses happen again, and the Sixers will be the first team to feel that impact. Look for the Celtics to set the tone for the series with two one-sided victories in the first two home games of the series.

Brown is a player that seemed to take the challenge of leading the Celtics without Tatum as his personal responsibility. Consider that task checked off the list. Brown is clearly a brilliant physical specimen with strength and power as his most obvious assets. However, there’s much more to his game, and his ability to hit the medium- and long-range shots often made a huge difference for head coach Joe Mazzulla’s team.

Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and a somewhat surprising 5.1 assists per game during the regular season. Tatum came back to play 16 regular-season game and he contributed 21.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He felt his way for his first 10 games back, but he returned to something close to top form in his last few games.

Derrick White is an All-Star as well and while he doesn’t have the same kind of profile as Brown or Tatum, he is a difference maker when the game is on the line.

The supporting cast has been superb once again. Payton Pritchard is one of the most underrated players in the league with his ability to score and also create turnovers. Center Neemias Queta may be the most improved player in the league. Midseason acquisition Nikola Vucevic can be a key contributor and he can take over the role that former Celtic Al Horford used to play so effectively.

While the individual talent level is high, the team basketball concept comes into play every night for the Celtics and that will provide the edge in this series.

Sixers came through with excellent effort vs. Magic

The Sixers did not execute with a lot of consistency during the regular season, and there was a hot-and-cold aspect to their play. They were very close to top form in their 109-97 Play-In triumph over the Magic as Maxey led the way with 31 points and rookie V.J. Edgecombe had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Embiid is recovering from an emergency appendectomy, and he seems more likely to play when the series moves to Philadelphia for Game 3.

If the Sixers are 0-2 in the series when they hit their home floor, it is clear that head coach Nick Nurse should have his players prepared to play their best game. That may or may not be good enough to beat the Celtics.

They certainly should have some surges that will allow them to take a lead at several moments in the game, but the Celtics are a group of veterans and they have had postseason success on the road. Game 3 will come down to the last five minutes and it will probably be a last-shot-wins type of game.

That means the Sixers could get their win in Game 3. If they do, the Celtics will be single-minded in Game 4 and punish the Sixers in that game. If the Celtics win Game 3, the intensity will be gone from this series. Boston may relax in the next Game 4 and let the Sixers have their win before going back to Boston and closing out the series.

The Celtics are the better, more experienced and more determined team. They begin their 2026 playoff journey with a 5-game triumph over the 76ers.
