When Vikings’ Harrison Smith expects to make his 2026 debut

If loyalty had a face, it would look like Harrison Smith. He will enter his 15th season with the Minnesota Vikings after signing a one-year contract worth $12.25 million on Saturday. Not that it was difficult for Smith to accept the offer.

Many thought that the veteran safety would retire, which Minnesota also expected at the end of his 14th season. Apparently, Smith was not done yet, and the Vikings were prepared to have him back.

While he did not participate in training camp, the 37-year-old Smith is eyeing to play in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Garafolo expressed surprise at Smith’s big contract, adding that coach Kevin O’Connell and defensive coordinator Brian Flores “pushed hard for the deal.”

“It’s a really good number for a guy who was sitting out there. He got some incentives on top of that, and some of that $12.25 million is what they call per-game roster bonuses, meaning he’s got to be active for those. But this is a remarkably consistent guy who’s played anywhere from 90% to 100% of the snaps for most of his career,” said Garafolo.

After being released by the Vikings in March, Smith was in limbo. He did not generate significant interest in free agency. He pondered walking away, but the lure of competition must have been too difficult to ignore.

Last season, the two-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler logged 54 total tackles, one sack, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions in 15 games. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 17.

The Vikings drafted Smith with the No. 29 pick in 2012.
