Mike Florio predicts Dianna Russini comeback could be ‘as soon as tomorrow’

Mike Florio has a prediction on the comeback of Dianna Russini and suggests it could be “as soon as tomorrow.”

Week 1 of the NFL season is finally here, and amid her resignation from The Athletic back in April, Russini is not on the bill of any major sports platforms following her scandal with Mike Vrabel. Florio shared his thoughts on Monday, Sept. 7, about Russini’s comeback.

“The one wild card that continues to hide somewhere in the deck relates to Russini. She seems to be planning a comeback, potentially as soon as this week,” Florio wrote. “Possibly as soon as tomorrow. One day before the Patriots play in Seattle.”

Russini has not spoken out publicly since the alleged affair with the New England Patriots head coach came to light. Photos of the pair at an Arizona resort were published by Page Six as they were allegedly holding hands and hugging back in April. Florio predicts that her return will offset more questions in Vrabel’s direction about the alleged incident.

“If she deviates from her prior position that the whole thing is a nothing burger, what will she say? And what, if any, questions will it spark for Vrabel, who may find himself once again talking about anything else in response before buttoning it with a comment about offensive line play?” Florio said.

The Athletic has gone through an internal investigation over the Russini and Vrabel scandal and has not yet come to a conclusion if her reporting was influenced by the alleged relationship. Mike Semel, The Athletic’s editorial director for standards and editorial quality, conducted a review of her stories during her time at the publication.

“Russini should have disclosed to The Athletic the nature of her relationship with Vrabel to allow editors to assess the kinds of stories on which she should have been working, if any,” Semel concluded. “She did not.”

Semel stated that while Russini’s conduct was “deemed below standards” there were no biases found in her reporting in the favor of Vrabel.

“Most of what Russini wrote about Vrabel or the Patriots was transactional and newsy,” Semel wrote. “In addition, I’ve not found a clear link to conclude that Russini used her platform to promote Vrabel or help his teams during her time at The Athletic.”

She has not addressed the nature of the relationship but spoke out in defense of her journalism.

“I stand by any and all reporting I’ve ever done in my career,” Russini stated.
