What prominent Texas Tech booster said about controversial Brendan Sorsby ruling

College football quarterback Brendan Sorsby recently admitted to betting over $90,000 on various sports, including 40 seperate bets made on the Indiana Hoosiers football team during his tenure with the program in 2022. The NCAA made him permanently ineligible, but a Texas state judge overturned that ruling with an injunction.

What was a permanent ban turned into a two-game suspension for the new Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback. On Monday, after the ruling was made, prominent booster and board chair of the football program, Cody Campbell, issued a statement regarding Sorsby’s ruling, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. Campbell seemingly backed Sorsby while offering advice to other student-athletes at Texas Tech.

“This unfortunate situation is the outcome of a broken system,” said Campbell. “I’m doing everything I can to fix it, but until there is a permanent solution, Texas Tech and its student athletes have to do the best they can to navigate and compete amid the chaos that exists in the reality of the world we live in.”

Brendan Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech in January 2026 shortly after the 2025-26 regular season ended. He will be a redshirt senior by the time the 2026-27 campaign begins, and due to the ruling of his case, he could be the starting quarterback once his two-game suspension is served.

Sorsby began his collegiate career in 2022, playing for the Indiana Hoosiers for two seasons before transferring to the Cincinnati Bearcats. Sorsby played 12 games for the program last season, finishing with 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 61.6% completion percentage.

If his two-game suspension holds, then Brendan Sorsby may not make his debut with Texas Tech until September 18. The Red Raiders are scheduled to take on the Houston Cougars that day in a home contest.
