What Mystics coach said after getting escorted off court by police during loss to Dream

The Washington Mystics are one of the youngest teams in the W. Washington is now just 4-5 on the season after getting crushed 109-77 by Atlanta. That game got out of hand, in part, due to Washington’s coaching staff melting down during the second half.

Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson was escorted off the court by police after being ejected for arguing with officials.

After the game, Johnson admitted that he simply “lost his cool.”

“There’s nothing more than that,” Johnson told reporters, per ESPN’s Michael Voepel. “That’s it. Officials did what was appropriate, and that’s all I can say.”

The incident happened at the 3:52 mark in the third quarter. Alicia Florez Getino was called for a foul while defending Angel Reese, who was driving the bucket. Johnson did not agree with the foul call, getting into a heated argument with the officials. All the while, his assistant coaches were attempting to drag him to the bench.

Ultimately, three police officers defused the situation and Johnson left the court.

“I don’t want to take away from Atlanta playing really hard and from us having a learning moment for our team,” Johnson added. “Not a great moment for our team or me … but that certainly doesn’t define the togetherness, the toughness, the joy we have. My ejection is not a great thing. That’s certainly not going to be a consistent thing.”

It may not have been Johnson’s proudest moment, but his team still stands behind him.

“Coach always has our back,” Kiki Iriafen said. “He’s going to do whatever to protect us. I was just trying my best to kind of diffuse it.”

Hopefully Washington can recenter themselves in time for their next matchup. Getting a win would move them to .500 on the season.
