Warriors GM drops highly intriguing roster update amid LeBron James rumors

Golden State Warriors fans were hit with some disappointing news on Tuesday afternoon, as ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that LeBron James’ free agency focus is currently on the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. He confirmed that the Dubs remain in the mix for the global sports icon, but the more accessible Eastern Conference seemingly has most of the 41-year-old’s attention at the present time. Mike Dunleavy Jr. does not appear worried.

The Warriors general manager was in an outwardly positive mood during the squad’s Summer League clash with the Memphis Grizzlies. He dropped a soundbite that is sure to intrigue fans.

“I think we’re getting close to finalizing the roster, so we’re looking forward to that finish point,” Dunleavy told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. The reporter said what many have been wondering. “Maybe Draymond Green, we’ll see beyond that.” Dunleavy continued to tease.

“We’ll see, we’ll see, we shall see,” he said. This might just be your run-of-the-mill GM speak, but Golden State has already shown that it is willing to do something.

The prevailing opinion is that Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option in order to afford the organization additional financial flexibility for its pursuit of LeBron James. Although the tenacious forward and four-time NBA champion is expected to re-sign, the Bay Area will be crushed if the Warriors do not bring in another difference-maker.

James cannot answer all the questions surrounding the franchise’s future, but he could provide Golden State with more offensive firepower for the 2026-27 campaign. The four-time Finals MVP surely respects the Dubs’ championship pedigree and has already made it clear how he feels about playing with Stephen Curry. He has also become accustomed to California. The man wants a fifth ring, however.

And that ultimate goal could be extremely difficult to achieve on the Warriors. James may not love the idea of playing his 24th NBA season alongside an aging core that will have to get past the young and intimidating Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. Given Golden State’s recent injury woes, there is always a chance the all-time great is forced to carry the squad for an extended period of time, just as he did with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Regardless of his astounding longevity, such a formula does not seem like a recipe for championship success in 2027. The 76ers and Cavs offer stout rosters that could share in the burden, which might appeal more to LeBron James. The Warriors are still in the hunt, though, so there is no point in making decisive judgements quite yet.

Mike Dunleavy Jr. does not sound defeated. Take that for what you will.
