Victor Wembanya’s post-Game 5 declaration will have Spurs fans hyped
The San Antonio Spurs are one win away from reaching the Western Conference Finals. After Game 4 of their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio suddenly found themselves in a bit of a pickle. With Victor Wembanyama’s return, though, the Spurs quickly regained control of the series.
Wembanyama was dominant in the Spurs’ Game 5 win over the Timberwolves. Despite the high of the win, Wemby and the Spurs remain focused on their ultimate goal: winning the NBA championship.
“But as I said, the job is not finished,” Wembanyama said immediately after the game. “We have one more game to get to the conference finals.”
There was concern that Wembanyama wouldn’t be able to play after being ejected in Game 4. The Spurs center seemed to intentionally elbow Timberwolves center Naz Reid in the head, resulting in an ejection. Despite cries from Wolves fans, Wembanyama was not suspended any further.
Wembanyama finished the game with an insane double-double: 27 points, 17 rebounds, and five blocks. His presence was felt on the defensive end, as the Timberwolves’ shot-creators were completely unwilling to challenge the French center at the rim. Wembanyama was the anchor of a defensive scheme specifically tailored to take the slashers of the Wolves out of the game, and they did that flawlessly.
Keldon Johnson came off the bench for the Spurs to add 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, while Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox had 18 and 17 points apiece. San Antonio’s balanced effort on the offensive end led to the win, as six players scored in double figures for the team. They also did an excellent job limiting Anthony Edwards’ production: the All-Star guard did finish with 20 points on 6-13 shooting, but he also coughed up the ball four times and had just two assists on the night.
The Spurs now have a chance to make it back to the Conference Finals for the first time in the post-Greg Popovich era. Game 6 will be played in Minnesota on Friday. The Timberwolves have shown in this series that they won’t back down even with the odds against them. How will San Antonio respond to the incoming counterpunch from Minnesota?
