Victor Wembanyama draws ‘nightmare’ claim from retired general

The San Antonio Spurs are two wins away from the NBA Finals in the midst of a 2-2 series in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been a major headache for opposing teams to try and defend both in the regular season and the playoffs.

During a recent segment of ESPN‘s ‘NBA Today’ show, former United States general and current chairman of USA Basketball Martin Dempsey weighed in on the Spurs’ star whom he is quite familiar with when it comes to international competition.

“He’s my personal nightmare as chairman of USA Basketball,” Dempsey said. “Many, many of the athletes in the Finals, as I travel around with the NBA, I’m always trying to link with players both those who have played for us and those who have played for other countries.

“I said he was my personal nightmare, that’s true. I’m sure that our head coach of the men’s team, Erik Spoelstra, is probably feeling exactly that way watching him grow and develop. But bring it on. Let’s see who can last for those 40 minutes of FIBA basketball.”

Through the Spurs current run in the playoffs, Victor Wembanyama’s first postseason appearance, he’s been averaging 23.1 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 3.8 blocked shots with splits of 53.4 percent shooting from the field, 37.1 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 85.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The Spurs are back in the postseason for the first time since the 2018-19 season. This has been Mitch Johnson’s first full year as head coach after taking over as interim last season following Gregg Popovich’s departure and ultimate retirement.
