Ty Simpson doubles down on ‘redneck in LA’ mic drop, shuts down draft critics
The Los Angeles Rams made a controversial decision by drafting QB Ty Simpson in the first round. Many Rams fans hoped for a player who could help the team win a Super Bowl right away instead of a backup quarterback. But Simpson is not letting the controversy get in the way of enjoying his rookie season.
Simpson sat down for an interview with Sports Illustrated on May 22nd. He doubled down on comments he made after the draft about being a “redneck in LA.”
“Well, I said that because I’m a kid from rural west Tennessee, in Martin, who grew up on just hunting and fishing, and wearing boots and jeans, and then coming to L.A., having a different lifestyle,” Simpson said, per Gilberto Manzano of Sports Illustrated. “Also, I went to Alabama, which is about as redneck as it gets, and then coming to L.A. was like a culture shock. I feel like I’m fitting in pretty good, but I still believe that I’m a redneck in L.A.”
Simpson will get another taste of NFL action when OTAs kick off on Tuesday.
Simpson also shot back at his draft critics when asked about the controversy surrounding him being a first-round pick.
“I really didn’t care, to be honest with you. Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business,” Simpson added. “So, the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick, so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be, the best Ty I can be, and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do.”
It will be fascinating to see how Simpson looks under center during training camp and the preseason. That may be all that Rams fans see of him in 2026.
