Tottenham given £70m headache with interest in Premier League attacker

Tottenham have been warned they would likely need to pay over the odds to sign Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo.

talkSPORT understands Gakpo, who has a contract until June 2028 with the Reds, is of interest to Spurs this summer.

Gakpo has been with Liverpool since January 2023

Given the time remaining on his deal coupled with the price other wingers have moved for this window, it is understood Liverpool won’t let Gakpo depart for a cut-price fee.

And that’s because of Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona.

Ben Jacobs’ update on Gakpo’s future

“There’s been links in the last few days with Cody Gakpo,” talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs said in the latest edition of The Window.

“He is a name on Tottenham’s list. Let’s see how that develops.

“Liverpool don’t really have a desire to sell and if anyone wants to do business with Liverpool, they’re going to be pointing for example to Anthony Gordon’s £70million move from Newcastle United to Barcelona.

“The market is inflated and Liverpool have a very high asking price for Cody Gakpo.

“The player also, despite reports in the Netherlands, hasn’t at the time of recording told Liverpool that he wants to leave. But Spurs might be one to watch.”

Gakpo made 52 appearances for Liverpool last term, scoring nine goals and contributing six assists.

The Netherlands international was Mr Versatile for Liverpool amid injuries to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, playing up top and on the left wing.

Unfortunately, it was a season to forget for the Reds as they failed to defend their Premier League crown.

Liverpool ultimately finished fifth, which was good enough to secure Champions League qualification.

Gakpo will also start the new season with a fresh face in the Anfield dugout as Andoni Iraola replaces Arne Slot.

Sav-vy move

The 27-year-old isn’t the only wide forward on Spurs’ radar.

According to Jacobs, Manchester City winger Savinho remains of interest to Spurs as well, with the two clubs in ‘on-off talks’ regarding the Brazilian.

The north London outfit was heavily linked with a move for Savinho this time last year and again in January, but a deal never materialised.

Tottenham have already shown themselves to be big spenders this summer with five fresh arrivals.

Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have all joined on free transfers, while Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes arrived for sizeable fees.

Van Hecke moved from Brighton for £52m while Fernandes became the club’s record signing at £85m.

Spurs are poised to raise the bar for their record transfer once more having agreed an eye-watering £100m deal with Newcastle to sign Sandro Tonali.

The mega spending spree comes as Spurs look to avoid finishing 17th for a third straight season.
