Brewers tie franchise record in blowout win over Mariners
Well, that’s something you don’t see every day. Blowouts in the MLB tend to look a bit ridiculous, and this game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners is no exception. Milwaukee completely dismantled their opponents in a 22-0 blowout. It was a one-of-a-kind performance that will be recorded in the history books forever.
On the Brewers’ side, they set a major franchise record for themselves. According to Underdog MLB, Milwaukee tied the franchise record for most runs scored in a game today.
The first time the team scored 22 runs in a game was back on August 28, 1992. Up against the Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee won that game 22-2. This game is also the first 22-0 shutout in league history where the home team won: the previous two 22-0 wins were won by the visiting teams (Pirates in 1975, Indians in 2004).
Every player who took an at-bat for the Brewers recorded a hit. The team finished with 22 hits as well, relying on small-ball for the most part and just getting on base. Four players hit home runs in the game: Christian Yelich (3-run homer in the 5th), Jake Bauers (2-run homer in the 6th), David Hamilton (3-run homer in the sixth), and Luis Lara (3-run homer in the 8th). Milwaukee went an astonishing 11-of-18 with runners in scoring position.
On the other side of the ball, the Brewers did an excellent job shutting down the struggling Mariners offense. Kyle Harrison pitched five innings of no-run ball, striking out eight players in the process. Seattle only mustered up five hits and got on base just nine times. They went 0-6 with runners in scoring position, failing to put a dent in the Milwaukee defense.
The Brewers improved to 78-48 on the season, retaining a firm grasp on their lead in the NL Central. They’re still on top of the NL playoff picture with the first seed, overtaking the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. Can Milwaukee parlay this hot streak into the postseason and finally win their first NL pennant since moving leagues?
