Hull City vs Manchester United LIVE commentary: Michael Carrick hints at return for player after 20 months

Marcus Rashford could feature for Manchester United for the first time in 20 months in the opening lunchtime kick-off of the new Premier League season.

The Red Devils finished strongly last term with their former midfielder at the helm and start the 2026/27 campaign at newly promoted Hull City on Saturday.

Carrick was awarded the permanent managerial role at Old Trafford after securing a third-place finish and qualifying for the Champions League.

During the transfer window, United have recruited strongly in their midfield with the additions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Additionally, Marcus Rashford could feature for United in the Premier League for the first time since December 2024, following loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona.

The 28-year-old, wearing the No. 9 jersey, logged his first minutes back in a United shirt in a 4-2 friendly defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan last Saturday.

Carrick has consistently referred to the England international as ‘our player’ and admitted it was ‘exciting’ to have him back.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will be hoping to mark their top-flight return after a nine-year absence with a victory – though survival remains a daunting task for any newly promoted side.

Hull faced controversy last season to reach this position, beating Middlesbrough in the final after Southampton were caught cheating and banished from the play-off final after ‘Spygate’.

Team news for Hull City v Man United

United striker Benjamin Sesko trained at Carrington on Tuesday despite missing the entirety of United’s pre-season schedule.

While the Slovenia international is expected to become the Red Devils main striker this season, Bryan Mbuemo, Matheus Cunha, and Joshua Zirkzee have all slotted in the position during pre-season.

Matthijs de Ligt was also present in training as he continues to step up his recovery ahead of the new campaign.

The Netherlands defender has been sidelined since last November with back surgery.

However, there were no signs of Mason Mount ahead of the season opener after the midfielder picked up a blow during a recent 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking after the incident in Gothenburg, Carrick explained: “He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”

Between the posts, Senne Lammens remains the undisputed starter, with both Tom Heaton and Karl Darlow lacking match sharpness.

Meanwhile, Sergej Jakirovic has targeted strengthening the defence of the Tigers and has brought in Greece international keeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos and Senegalese centre-back Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano.

Defenders Elliot Stroud and Lucas Herrington, alongside midfielders Hidemasa Morita and Jens Hjerto-Dahl, also look like quality additions to the squad.

Hull are expected to set up as a direct, counter-attacking unit built around supplying crosses to main target man Oli McBurnie.

Carrick says Man United ‘are ready’

Carrick believes his team are heading into the new Premier League season in a positive mood despite ending pre-season with a 4-2 defeat to Milan.

He said: “I think, as a whole, it’s been very good, I think there are a lot of positives to take from it. A lot of the performances, the group’s grown and got stronger.

“So overall, I think [it’s been positive] barring today. We’re disappointed with today. We didn’t play well today, so there are reasons for that. We need to learn from it. We need to improve.

“On the whole, we’re ready for [Hull]. A lot of the boys will be better for the minutes and, as I say, we’ve done a lot of work on the training pitch.

“We’ve got a good squad, so there are decisions to be made. We’ve got a good week’s training this week as well to get some more work in. So we’ll be ready for next week.

“I think there’s a whole different feeling when it’s the first league game of the season. Having a whole squad back home, back at Carrington, and looking forward to the start.”
