Tim Ledgler left confused by ownership’s Billy Donovan support amid GM search

In all honesty, nobody truly knows what’s next for the Chicago Bulls. They fired VP Arturas Karnisovas and GM Marc Eversley, but nobody knows who’s next in line. Also, nothing has come out about whether head coach Billy Donovan has a future in Chicago.

The only thing the Bulls have going for them is two first-round draft picks from the Portland Trail Blazers, who won the Play-In game over the Phoenix Suns—certainly, a badge of honor worth showing off.

Meanwhile, Chicago owner Michael Reinsdorf appears to want to keep Donovan as head coach.

Much to the chagrin of NBA analyst Tim Ledgler, per CHGO Bulls. Essentially, Ledgler sees this as going against the grain. The conventional wisdom is that when teams get a new general manager, they want to bring on a coach who embraces their way of doing things.

“It’s kind of shocking, because that’s just not protocol,” he said.

Chicago concluded the 2026 season at 31-51. A season marred by roster turnover, injuries, and inconsistency. Donovan has been the head coach since 2020, around the same time Karnisovas and Eversley took over in management.

Since then, Chicago has made only one playoff appearance under Donovan’s tenure. They lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round in 2022, in five games. From there, Chicago struggled to win at least 40 games in a season.

Despite all the rumblings around Donovan, Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis have expressed hope that Donovan will remain on.

Historically, the Reinsdorf ownership has been tight-lipped and hands-off in its governance of the franchise.
