Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson on pace to shatter unfortunate franchise record

The Detroit Tigers have had a tough season so far, with the team mired in a losing record. Detroit infielder Spencer Torkelson has also been going through a tough time. He is on pace to set a franchise record for the most strikeouts in a season.

“It’s only June 20, but Spencer Torkelson already has 96 strikeouts — putting him on pace for 205 strikeouts in the 2026 season. That would break Riley Greene’s franchise record of 201 strikeouts, set in 2025,” the Detroit Free Press posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Detroit defeated the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, 4-1. Torkelson did post a strikeout in the game, but also managed one hit and one run.

This season, Torkelson has 12 home runs and 29 RBIs. He hopes to help turn around a Detroit team that is close to the bottom of the American League Central standings.

Tigers hoping to turn the ship around

Detroit has been dealing with an injury for most of the season to starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. Skubal returned to the mound for the team in an outing recently against Chicago.

“We’re fighting tooth and nail for every win we can get, and obviously we kind of put ourselves in that position,” Skubal said, per MLB.com. “We’ve got to fight our way out of it. It’s probably a perfect storm for all that stuff to happen and for me to react the way I did.”

Skubal was so fired up to pitch again that at one point, he got into a shouting match with several White Sox players.

“I’m a competitive guy. I kind of wear my emotions out there and that’s part of how I play the game,” Skubal said. “I think it’s just baseball, going back and forth. It is what it is. It happened. It’s over with.”

The Tigers are now 32-44 on the season after winning Saturday. Detroit is 5-5 over their last 10 games.
