Tigers enter rare MLB history with demolition of Mariners

The Detroit Tigers did something incredible on Thursday. Not only did they win their series against the Seattle Mariners with an 11-0 beatdown in the finale at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, but they also pulled off an extremely rare feat only one other team in MLB history has ever accomplished, according to OptaSTATS.

“The @tigers are the second team in MLB history to have a 10+ run shutout win in 3 consecutive series (14-0 vs. Orioles, 11-0 at A’s, 11-0 at Mariners). The other was the Boston Beaneaters in September 1897,” OptaSTATS shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

That must feel good for Detroit fans, especially in the aftermath of the Tigers losing Tarik Skubal.

It can be recalled that the Tigers demolished the Athletics in an 11-0 win to complete a three-game sweep on Aug. 2 at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. Prior to that, Detroit took down the Baltimore Orioles, 14-0, in the Tigers’ lone win in that three-game series at Comerica Park on July 28.

The domination showed up again for the Tigers in the Seattle game. Framber Valdez had a solid evening on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings with five hits allowed and two walks issued, along with five strikeouts.  Kyle Finnegan and
Brenan Hanifee did the rest for Detroit’s pitching staff.

It helped Valdez a lot that the Tigers’ offense provided run support early on, scoring four runs in the first two innings. The Tigers added four more in the seventh and three in the final frame.

Catcher Dillon Dingler had a night himself, going 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs. He opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, and he has hit a homer in three straight games.

The Tigers improved to 56-59 and will next take on the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series that begins Friday at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
