Thunder is dominating Lakers in a way no team has since 1976 merger
The Oklahoma City Thunder are putting on an absolute clinic against the Los Angeles Lakers, and the numbers are starting to look historic. After taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Semifinals with a 125-107 beatdown in Game 2, the Thunder established a staggering milestone that highlights their sheer dominance.
Oklahoma City has now defeated Los Angeles by at least 15 points five separate times this season, spanning both the regular season and the playoffs. This marks the most 15-point wins any team has recorded against the Lakers in a single season since the 1976 NBA-ABA merger.

The Game 2 victory showcased exactly why the Thunder remain undefeated in the postseason. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren led the charge, dropping 22 points apiece. Holmgren was highly efficient, shooting 7-for-11 from the field and draining three triples. Their balanced offensive attack and suffocating defense proved too much for the Lakers to handle.
Los Angeles simply cannot find answers. Head coach JJ Redick openly voiced his frustrations with the referees, but he also watched his squad unravel due to costly turnovers. Those self-inflicted mistakes ultimately erased a spectacular 31-point, six-assist performance from Austin Reaves.
The Lakers repeatedly shot themselves in the foot, allowing Oklahoma City to dictate the pace and capitalize in transition. Even with LeBron James pushing the tempo, Los Angeles failed to string together enough stops to stay within striking distance.
This series feels entirely lopsided. The Thunder previously handed the Lakers three massive blowout losses during the regular season, by 29, 43, and 36 points, before taking Game 1 by 18. Now, following another 18-point shellacking in Game 2, Los Angeles faces a daunting hole.
As the series shifts to Southern California for Game 3, Redick and his coaching staff must completely overhaul their game plan. If the Lakers cannot drastically reduce their turnovers and find a way to slow down Oklahoma City’s high-octane offense, they risk getting swept out of the playoffs by a team playing on an entirely different level.
