The Colorado Avalanche blew a third-period lead to the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. Vegas won Game 2 of the Western Conference Final, by a 3-1 score. An astonishing statistic tells the whole story for Colorado.

“It was their first loss in 46 games this season that they took a lead into the third period,” the Associated Press reported.

Colorado had a one-goal lead heading into the third period. In a matter of a few minutes, that one-goal lead turned into a one-goal deficit. Vegas scored three total goals in the period to walk away with the win.

“It stings for sure right now, but tomorrow we’ll wake up, have a meeting, fly to Vegas and regroup,” Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog said. “That’s all you can do.”

Vegas now leads the series, 2-0. Colorado goalie Scott Wedgewood was stopping everything Vegas was throwing at him, until it all went kaput. It started when Golden Knights star Jack Eichel scored at 9:15 of the third period.

Things went downhill fast after that for Colorado. Avalanche players were stunned to see that quick momentum swing.

“I thought just about every area of our game was better besides maybe the power play,” Landeskog said. “And then they scored two perfect shots, so yeah, I liked our game a lot. There’s not a lot of comfort in saying that, I guess, after a loss. But at the end of the day we’ll regroup.”

The Avalanche now have their backs against the wall. Statistics show that teams with 2-0 series leads have great success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That means nothing to Colorado’s players.

“At the end of the day,” Landeskog said, “we’ve got to find a way to score some goals.”

Game 3 of the Avalanche-Golden Knights series is on Sunday, in Vegas.
