Scheffler may be top of the betting markets, but having missed the cut at The Scottish Open last week. Can the American really be chalked up as outright favourite to win at Royal Birkdale?

Home town hero Tommy Fleetwood is right in the running too. The Liverpudlian has grown up on the fairways of Birkdale and should know the track like no-one else. But will the pressure of bagging his first major be too much to handle?

McIlroy last won The Open way back in 2014. Up until last year that was his most recent major victory. Over 10 years of toil preceded this, until 2025 when he completed The Grand Slam by finally winning the Masters.

The shackles appear to be off the Northern Irishman both on and off the course – he went back-to-back at Augusta earlier this year and has a new lease of life which could spell danger for the rest of the field.

McIlroy tuned up with a strong 2nd place in Scotland last week and he could well be in the running again come Sunday.
