With Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby now eligible to play in the 2026 season, there’s no doubt a lot of conversation surrounding the controversial decision. As the controversial ruling involving the Texas Tech football star will be widely discussed, an NFL insider asks rivals for their opinions on Sorsby as a player.

There’s no denying that Sorsby’s talent has been highly touted, though the gambling scandal he put himself in put his football career in jeopardy. With the eligibility granted, he’ll look for a fresh start with the Red Raiders. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic spoke to many within the Big 12, including a personnel director who is skeptical of Sorsby’s outlook this season.

“If you think that he’s going to plug-and-play into this of whatever level of NFL talent you think that he’s capable of, I think that is sorely underestimating the mental toll this is probably taking on him,” the personnel director said to Feldman. “He is 0-8 in November the last two years. We watched every game that he’s played for the last two seasons. He is toolsy, but it’s never been to the point, outside of maybe the game they played against Tech two years ago, where you felt this is the best dude on the field.”

There were others in the Big 12 that complimented Sorsby for his intangibles, but the Texas Tech football quarterback would continue to receive skepticism from the personnel director.

“I get it: He can run, and he’s got a good arm, but you watch the tape, there’s just some bad things, some strange losses, and some clunker performances. Just a lot of it,” they said. “And if you think about whatever he’s gone through the last year, and the scrutiny he’s already gone through, and now the scrutiny that he’s going to receive, and he’s gonna come out and perform at a higher level? Man, that’s a hard scenario to see.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how Sorsby will play for the Red Raiders after everything that has happened.
