Heat legend Dwyane Wade reveals the biggest challenge of leading the NBA in scoring

Being the leading scorer on a team can be quite the tall task. Being the scoring champion for an entire season against the best scorers in the league is a different story, something that Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade successfully pulled off during one campaign.

Wade played 16 seasons in the NBA, including 15 with the Heat. He won three championships with the franchise, going down as their greatest player in history.

Wade had one season where he reached his peak as a scorer. It took place during the 2008-09 campaign, averaging 30.2 points, 7.5 assists, five rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game throughout 79 appearances. In the playoffs, he produced 29.1 points, 5.3 assists, five rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per contest against the Atlanta Hawks.

Wade did a new episode of his Wy Network podcast on Monday. There, he explained how he managed to pull off a campaign that he could be the league’s top scorer.

“I had to add different elements to my bag… to average 32.7, that means you have to have some 40, 50 point games in there… you have to be as consistent as ever to be the leading scorer of a season,” Wade said.

What lies ahead for Heat next season

While Dwyane Wade continues to enjoy his legacy as an NBA Hall of Famer, he looks forward to seeing the Heat start a new era of serious contention with Giannis Antetokounmpo on the team now.

Miami finished with a 43-39 record last season, finishing in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017, losing to the Charlotte Hornets in the play-in tournament.

The Heat have filled key rotation spots following the Antetokounmpo trade. Besides adding Thompson, they signed Tim Hardaway Jr., Nick Richards, Ryan Conwell and Tre Donaldson to the squad, helping the team gear up for an exciting era of basketball for the team’s fans.

Antetokounmpo pairs up with Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins as the main star core. Thompson, Davion Mitchell, Hardaway and others round out the group. Should plenty go well, they stand out as serious contenders in the East.
