Texas football’s Steve Sarkisian drops bottom line on Trevor Goosby’s Week 1 injury return

The Texas football program is just two days away from kicking off their 2026 college football season. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs altogether last year, having suffered three consequential losses during the regular season.

Texas has been dealing with an injury to starting offensive tackle Trevor Goosby in recent weeks, and now, Sarkisian has given the latest update on his status for Week 1 of the new season.

“I asked Steve Sarkisian about the risk reward of playing Texas left tackle Trevor Goosby in the season opener vs. maybe holding him out until Week 2 vs. Ohio State. He said it wasn’t about opponents. It was about Goosby’s health. He’s healthy,” reported Tyler Horka of Inside Texas on X, formerly Twitter.

“And he needs to play football,” said Sarkisian.

“I thought he had a really good practice on Monday. We increased his workload on Tuesday. He had a really good practice Tuesday. Came back good. We increased his workload Wednesday. He looked good again. We increased his workload even more today. He looked good again,” added Sarkisian, per On3 Sports.

Goosby is one of the key cogs in what is anticipated by many to be the best offensive line in the nation this year for Texas. The Longhorns are looking to finally break through and lift a championship for the first time in the Sarkisian era this year, with quarterback Arch Manning looking to build on his strong performance down the stretch of last season.

Texas is slated to get its new season underway on Saturday against Texas State at 3:30 pm ET at home.
