Not everybody is buying Rams’ runaway Aaron Donald hype train

The Los Angeles Rams recently shook up the NFL world when it was announced that Aaron Donald would be coming out of retirement to rejoin the team for the upcoming season. At age 35, and with two years out of the league, some fans are wondering how closely Donald will resemble his former version of himself, but it’s still a scary prospect for NFL teams.

Recently, some NFL scouts broke down their skepticism about how good Donald will actually be this year.

“My guess is he is a good player, but not great anymore,” said one league source, per Eric D. Williams of FOX Sports. “I think he plays around 35 to 40% of the defensive snaps for the Rams this year.

“To me, it’s more about his age than missing time. How many great 35-year-old defensive players are there in the NFL right now?”

“…he’s not immune to reality. He’s 35. He retired three years ago. It’s not easy to play at that age. It’s even harder being away for so long,” added another scout.

Indeed, few if any defensive players remain truly elite into their mid-30s, but if anyone was going to break the mold, it would be Donald, who was still one of the best players in the game by the time he retired two years ago.

Now, Donald will have the benefit of playing alongside superstar Myles Garrett, who many consider to be the best overall player in the NFL currently, after the Rams pried him away from the Cleveland Browns in a blockbuster trade.

The Rams are slated to get their new season underway on September 10 vs the San Francisco 49ers.
