Steelers’ Max Iheanachor’s return date gets pushed back in concerning injury update

The Pittsburgh Steelers are focusing on strengthening their offensive line to support veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers by investing heavily in Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor, whom they selected with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, Iheanachor encountered an early setback during Thursday’s practice at St. Vincent College. According to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, Iheanachor had to leave the practice field early during team drills due to an upper-body injury. Head athletic trainer Gabe Amponsah evaluated the 6-foot-6 lineman on the sidelines, specifically checking his neck and left shoulder area. After this evaluation, Iheanachor removed his helmet and walked off to undergo further medical assessment.

Initially, there was some optimism that the young lineman might avoid a long absence. However, his recovery timeline remains uncertain. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported on X that head coach Mike McCarthy provided an update on Iheanachor’s status. While the team had hoped the rookie tackle would return to practice on Monday, McCarthy confirmed that Iheanachor will not participate, and his official return timeline is now listed as to be determined. This delay presents a significant challenge for the rookie as he progresses through “hump week” in camp, causing him to miss valuable padded practice reps and live competition against Pittsburgh’s veteran edge rushers.

This recent injury occurs during a crucial developmental summer for the first-round selection. At the beginning of OTAs three months ago, Brian Batko of Post-Gazette Sports reported that Iheanachor started his professional career working with the second-team offense at right tackle, backing up Dylan Cook. While the Steelers see Iheanachor as a long-term anchor on the offensive line, the coaching staff has made it clear that the rookie must earn his place on the depth chart. Overcoming this injury setback will test his resilience as he aims to return to full health and secure a significant role ahead of Pittsburgh’s 2026 season opener.
