Canadiens legend Carey Price shares bold take that will fire up fans

The Montreal Canadiens will probably never have a goalie like Carey Price again, but the retired Habs legend believes the current iteration of the team is well-positioned to compete for a Stanley Cup.

“It sure feels that they’re a contender,” the storied franchise’s all-time winningest goalie said in an interview with NHL.com’s Dave Stubbs last week. “A lot of things need to go right for (a championship) to happen.”

The Canadiens haven’t won an NHL title since 1993, but Price helped them march all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021 before losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games.

A persistent knee injury forced the now-38-year-old into early retirement, but not before he spent 15 seasons with the Canadiens, winning both the Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy in 2015. He last appeared in five games during the 2021-22 season.

Montreal’s goaltending situation looks to be in good hands, though, with Jakub Dobes authoring a breakout 2025-26 season and Jacob Fowler remaining one of the team’s top prospects.

“I’m excited for those guys, seeing them experience success early,” Price said, per Stubbs.

“It’s an exciting time in their careers. They’re both young players. I remember what it was like to be that age and find success. That’s a confidence-builder, not just for the goalies but for the team. They both seem to be confident in their abilities and that’s a good thing.”

Behind Dobes, the Canadiens advanced to the Eastern Conference Final this spring, beating both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres in seven-game thrillers.

Although it ended in disappointment with a five-game loss to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, it was a critical step forward for one of the NHL’s most promising young rosters.

Lane Hutson is developing into a franchise defenseman, Cole Caufield just scored 50 goals, and Nick Suzuki captured the Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward in 2025-26.

The Canadiens should continue to contend for top spot in the Atlantic Division as the young core ascends, with star power at every position and one of the most passionate fan bases in sports behind them.

It’s a new era in Montreal, but Carey Price is clearly keeping a watchful eye on the only NHL franchise he’s ever played for.
