Cardinals make expected Larry Fitzgerald jersey retirement decision

There will never be another No. 11 for the Arizona Cardinals. Just days after Larry Fitzgerald was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Cardinals announced another well-deserved honor for arguably the greatest player in franchise history.

Arizona is officially retiring Fitzgerald’s No. 11.

NFL insider Ari Meirov shared the announcement Monday.

“The Cardinals have announced that Larry Fitzgerald’s No. 11 will be retired and never worn by another player in franchise history. Fitzgerald will also be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor at halftime of their Week 7 game against the Broncos on Oct. 25.”

Fitzgerald didn’t just establish himself as one of the greatest wide receivers of his generation. He spent his entire NFL career with the Cardinals and became synonymous with the organization.

In an era where franchise players rarely remain with one team for their entire careers, Fitzgerald did exactly that. Fitzgerald is receiving the ultimate recognition from the franchise he represented for nearly two decades.

He rewrote Arizona’s record books, became one of the most productive receivers in NFL history and helped lead the Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance following the 2008-09 season. Larry also performed at a high level in every playoff appearance that the Cardinals made. Fitzgerald gave everything he had to the Cardinals, and it’s fitting that nobody will wear No. 11 for Arizona again.

The legendary receiver gave an emotional thank you to the Cardinals during his HOF speech.

“I arrived in Arizona as a 20-year-old kid who didn’t know a single person,” Fitzgerald wrote. “I had no idea this desert would become the place that would shape me into the man I am today.”

“Your support was never conditional. You never asked me to be anything other than myself, and somehow that was always enough.”
