Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers reunites with ex-Packers TD monster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers back for one more run in 2026. Now, they have added a familiar face to the pass catchers he’ll be throwing to.

The Steelers have signed tight end Robert Tonyan to a one-year contract, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. The financial terms of his deal have not yet been revealed.

Over the past three seasons, Tonyan has played for the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs. However, he has made just 12 catches for 113 scoreless yards in that time. All but one catch and one yard came in that 2023 season.

Tonyan is far more known for his time with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-2022. Then, he caught 137 passes for 1,437 yards and 17 touchdowns. During the 2020 season, the tight end set new career-highs with 586 yards and 11 touchdowns on 52 receptions.

At this stage of his career, it’s fair to wonder if Tonyan will be able to put up those numbers. Still, it’s evident he is a clear favorite of Rodgers. And he at least had to impress the Steelers for them to give him an opportunity.

Still, Tonyan may be a bit buried on the depth chart. Pittsburgh still has Pat Friermuth and Darnell Washington, who was just signed to $42 million extension. Tonyan must prove his connection with Rodgers is as strong as ever to make a real impact in 2026.

With the quarterback set to retire after 2026, assuming he doesn’t reverse his decision, the Steelers want to maximize any gas Rodgers has left in the tank. Tonyan won’t turn Pittsburgh into offensive world beaters over night. But he gives their quarterback a familiar weapon and their offense a potential red zone threat.
