St. John’s star Bryce Hopkins fires back at Providence player taking shots at him
Bryce Hopkins took shots at a Providence player following their comments about him ahead of the No. 17 St. John’s Red Storm’s matchup against the Friars.
Hopkins is going through the fifth and final season of his collegiate career with the Red Storm. He had previous stints with the Kentucky Wildcats and Providence, spending one year with the former and three years with the latter.
Leaving the Friars for the Red Storm this past offseason, Hopkins’ former teammate Jamier Jones recently said he would’ve played over Hopkins if he stayed at Providence. Hopkins caught wind of those comments during Thursday’s press conference, per reporter Zach Braziller.
“He’s a competitor. He’s playing some good basketball, he’s a competitor — he should say he could play over me. He has an opinion, and I have one too — so that’s that,” Hopkins said.
What’s next for Bryce Hopkins, St. John’s

It’s clear that Bryce Hopkins wasn’t having his former teammate’s comments, showing he is looking forward to helping St. John’s take down Providence in the weekend showdown.
Hopkins has been productive as the team’s second-leading scorer this season. He is averaging 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game throughout 24 appearances. He is shooting 46.4% from the field, including 29.8% from beyond the arc, and 72.1% from the free-throw line.
St. John’s has a 19-5 overall record on the season, going 12-1 in its Big East matchups so far. They sit at second place in the conference standings, being above the Villanova Wildcats and the Creighton Blue Jays while trailing the UConn Huskies.
The Red Storm has made great progress since Rick Pitino took over the reins as head coach. They won the Big East championship and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, hoping to build on that success this year.
Rolling with 10 consecutive wins, the No. 17 Red Storm will continue preparations for their next matchup. They host the Providence Friars as tip-off will take place on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. ET.
