Padres’ Gavin Sheets creates new MLB club with HR stunner vs. Brewers

San Diego Padres pulled off another late-game escape on Wednesday, stunning the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 at American Family Field after scoring all three runs in the ninth inning.

With two outs and no one on in the ninth, the Padres were still scoreless before Miguel Andujar singled and Xander Bogaerts worked a walk to extend the inning. That set up Gavin Sheets, who belted a 3-run home run off Brewers closer Abner Uribe on an 0-1 slider. The blast traveled 389 feet to right-center and gave San Diego the lead.

Sheets finished 2-for-4 and produced his sixth home run of the season along with nine doubles and 16 RBI across 115 at-bats, despite a .226 batting average. The homer was also his third go-ahead, three-run shot in the ninth inning or later this season, making him the first player in MLB history to hit three go-ahead homers of three or more runs in the ninth inning or later in a single season. Moreover, Sheets also became the first Padres player to record three go-ahead homers in the ninth inning or later since BJ Upton in 2016.

The win came after another electric outing from Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski, who struck out 10 over seven innings, allowed four hits, and issued no walks. He retired 14 straight batters at one point and reached 40 pitches of 100 mph or higher for a third consecutive start. His ERA dropped to 2.12.

Michael King worked 5 2/3 innings for San Diego, allowing one run on Brice Turang’s RBI grounder in the fifth while striking out five and lowering his ERA to 2.63. Jason Adam earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning.

In the ninth, Uribe first retired Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado before the Padres rallied. Mason Miller closed the game with his 13th save in as many chances, striking out Jackson Chourio to finish it. The win also ended the Brewers five-game winning streak.

Up next, Griffin Canning (0-1, 6.75 ERA) will take the mound for San Diego, while Kyle Harrison (3-1, 2.41 ERA) starts for Milwaukee in Thursday afternoon’s series finale.
