Let’s get one thing straight: the Los Angeles Chargers have absolutely no reason to pursue this trade unless a very specific scenario unfolds.

McCarthy has lost the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback competition to Kyler Murray, immediately creating questions about what comes next for the former first-round pick. Minnesota doesn’t have to trade McCarthy, but if he eventually decides he wants an opportunity to start elsewhere, his history with Harbaugh will inevitably connect him to Los Angeles.

The rumors will swirl, whether they are real or not.

The two won a national championship together at Michigan, and Harbaugh has never hidden how highly he thinks of his former quarterback.

But let’s make something perfectly clear.

The Chargers don’t need McCarthy.

Justin Herbert is the franchise quarterback, and Harbaugh has openly discussed his desire to help Herbert eventually reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There is no quarterback competition coming in Los Angeles, regardless of how much Harbaugh loves McCarthy.

That’s why the only trade scenario that makes any sense would involve swapping backup quarterbacks.

If Minnesota is committed to keeping McCarthy, this conversation never even begins. But what happens if McCarthy asks for a trade?

That’s where things become interesting.

Chargers Shouldn’t Sacrifice Meaningful Draft Capital For J.J. McCarthy

Chargers fans are well aware of how much Joe Hortiz loves his draft capital. There is no world where Hortiz offers anything better than a sixth-rounder, even if Harbaugh somehow pushes the idea.

McCarthy’s value is difficult to determine.

The Vikings invested heavily in him, so they aren’t going to give him away because Murray won the starting job. Opposing teams also aren’t likely to surrender premium draft capital for a quarterback who has yet to establish himself as a reliable NFL starter.

Minnesota’s current quarterback room includes Murray, McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer. That’s enough depth for the Vikings to at least entertain conversations if McCarthy decides he wants a fresh start. Why would the Vikings need Lance? They wouldn’t, but the move gives them a more versatile QB who matches Murray’s play on the field, much better than Wentz and Brosmer.

Still, the Chargers shouldn’t be offering a fifth-round pick — or potentially even a sixth — just to acquire another backup.

They already have Lance. That’s what makes a player-for-player framework more reasonable.

Minnesota would receive another former first-round quarterback to develop behind Murray while adding a late-round draft pick. Los Angeles would reunite McCarthy with the coach who helped him play the best football of his career, winning a National Championship before the NFL.

It’s a low-risk move for both teams. The biggest question is whether it even accomplishes anything for McCarthy.

Los Angeles Isn’t J.J. McCarthy’s Best Landing Spot

If McCarthy were to request a trade, he would not want to go to a team where he would be the backup to Herbert for his entire career. He would never take over unless of an injury. This is ultimately the problem with the entire idea.

McCarthy’s best option may actually be staying with the Vikings and continuing to develop. Murray has earned the starting job, but NFL quarterback situations can change quickly. Injuries happen, performances fluctuate, and opportunities emerge.

The only reason we’re even having this conversation is because of Harbaugh.

If Minnesota is willing to move him for limited compensation and if the Bolts decide they would rather have McCarthy than Lance, then general manager Joe Hortiz should make the call.

Knowing how Herbert operates, he likely wouldn’t care if the Chargers made this move. In fact, Herbert and McCarthy would likely become friends if they aren’talready.
