Giants’ Willy Adames ‘ashamed’ of brutal blunder in 4-0 loss to Dodgers

The San Francisco Giants were shut out 4-0 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night, undone by Shohei Ohtani’s pitching dominance and a costly seventh-inning baserunning error from Willy Adames.

Ohtani struck out eight Giants, allowing just four hits and two walks over seven shutout innings. He reached 100.6 mph in the first inning on a pitch to Bryce Eldridge and lowered his ERA to 0.82 on the season, including a 0.32 ERA against San Francisco. Across five career starts versus the Giants, he has allowed just one run while striking out 33 over 28 innings.

The Dodgers built a 4-0 lead with early offense against Giants starter Robbie Ray. Santiago Espinal and Mookie Betts hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning, both coming on middle-middle four-seam fastballs. Ray finished 4⅔ innings, allowing four runs and seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks. His ERA against Los Angeles over his last three starts dating back to 2025 now stands at 7.45.

San Francisco’s best opportunity came in the seventh inning. With one out, Adames and Matt Chapman ripped back-to-back singles, and Drew Gilbert followed with a deep fly ball to right-center. Andy Pages tracked it down, and Adames, who had already advanced far off second base, was doubled off to end the inning.

Adames admitted after the game that he lost track of the outs, calling it a critical error.

“I think I lost track of of the outs and made a mistake on the read, too,” said Adames. “Obviously, it’s a mistake that can’t happen in the game, and that mistake is probably the most ashamed that I would feel playing the game. It was my fault. That’s on me.”

The Giants were held without a hit with runners in scoring position in seven attempts and saw their three-game winning streak end. They also entered the day tied for last in MLB in FanGraphs’ baserunning metric and last in stolen bases.

San Francisco manager Tony Vitello said postgame that he had not yet spoken with Adames, but he acknowledged the misread on the play while stressing it did not independently decide the outcome and that the overall poor baserunning certainly is something that he plans to address.

Up next, it will be Giants RHP Landen Roupp (5-3, 3.09 ERA) taking the ball Thursday in the series finale against Dodgers RHP Emmet Sheehan (2-1, 4.79 ERA).
