Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama makes ‘addiction’ admission after bouncing Thunder

As phenomenal as Victor Wembanyama is on the court, he can be almost as revealing away from the rigors of play. In leading his San Antonio Spurs to the Western Conference championship over the Oklahoma City Thunder, the series MVP gushed with emotion as the seconds ticked down.

Shortly thereafter, asked what he most realized about himself through easily the biggest basketball battle of his young career, Wemby pondered before responding.

“I would say what I learned is I can go through hurdles that I didn’t know could get so high,” the generational talent shared. “It’s just pushing through, you know. I found resources inside of me. Relentlessness. I already knew that, but doing it at this level – this is the best basketball on the planet that’s being played right now – and the crazy thing is, maybe I’m crazy for that, but I want to do that 15, 20 more times.”

He then finished off his post-game interview session with a line that resonated in real time as much as for what could lie ahead.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t become an addiction. Maybe it is already.”

Wemby led a very balanced attack in a Game 7 victory that saw seven different Spurs score in the crucial fourth quarter. Their top scorer put in 22 points. Julian Champagnie added 20 while Stephon Castle contributed 16. Seven Spurs scored double figures, including all five starters (De’Aaron Fox had 15, Devin Vassell 11). Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson put in 11 while super rookie Dylan Harper finished with 12.

“My life is amazing and being with these guys, living these things with these guys that I love so, so, so much, it’s amazing. I want to live I want to have this feeling plenty, plenty more times in my life,” Wembanyama responded when asked what he enjoyed most about celebrating with his teammates.

The 2023 first overall pick of the NBA Draft hasn’t been shy about his lofty goals since entering the league. While he hasn’t reached his ultimate goal, he realizes the chance to achieve it is in front of him.

“I’m most excited about feeling what I felt when that buzzer went off again and again, and again, and even more. You work all these hours we put in, it’s for these type of emotions,” the French phenom shared following the 111-103 victory in Oklahoma City.

It’s an answer that continues a trend for Wembanyama. When he lost to the United State in the gold medal game of the 2024 Olympics, immediately after the contest he said that he felt bad for everyone else in years to come. That included the NBA, It’s a sentiment that was revisited after he led the youngest core in the league to the NBA Finals.

“Kind of,” he continued when asked if winning the West this early in his career is what he meant two years ago. “But I don’t worry really for them. I’m not worried. I’m worried about us winning, you know? That’s what I’m thinking about.”
He now gets that chance against the New York Knicks on the world’s biggest basketball stage, the NBA Finals.
