Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama has beautiful message for Gregg Popovich after Game 7 win over Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY — San Antonio Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama can’t wait to speak to Gregg Popovich after beating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. Wembanyama is four wins away from a title. When a reporter asked Victor what this victory will mean to Popovich, he couldn’t put it into words.

Instead, Wembanyama explained how he can’t wait to speak to Popovich, he said, during his postgame media availability after eliminating Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder.

“I can’t answer that question. I don’t know what it means for him. That’s a guy who’s got more experience as a coach than almost anybody. And has been through so many things in his career. And so many things right now as El Jefe,” Wembanyama said. “He goes through some things we can’t even imagine. So, I need to call him. I need to see. I need to talk to him because there’s no way I can understand right now how he feels.”

Wembanyama finished with 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting, including 3-for-5 from deep, seven rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal in Game 7’s eight-point win against the Thunder. Wembanyama led seven Spurs players in double figures, including all five starters, Julian Champagnie (20 points), who netted six threes, Stephon Castle (16 points), and De’Aaron Fox (15 points).

Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama has yet to reach his goal of winning a championship. While eliminating the defending champion Thunder is an enormous step toward Wembanyama’s first NBA Finals appearance, he knows there’s still plenty of work to do against the Knicks.

The Spurs will host the Knicks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday.
