Spurs’ Stephon Castle gets real on 0-2 ‘predicament’ vs. Knicks in NBA Finals

The San Antonio Spurs are once again in danger. They came into the NBA Finals as heavy favorites against the New York Knicks, despite their relative inexperience. Their incredible performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team most favored to win the championship, had everyone believing that they already have what it takes.

However, the Knicks have done an excellent job shutting down the Spurs. The Eastern Conference champions have correctly identified the holes in San Antonio’s game plans and punished them accordingly. As a result, San Antonio lost both of their home games and are headed to New York down 0-2 against the hottest team in NBA playoff history.

How are the Spurs coping with this adversity? Well, guard Stephon Castle said it best. The former Rookie of the Year acknowledged that their situation is less than ideal. However, Castle also insisted that this is nothing that this team can’t handle.

“This type of predicament is going to be tough, but I don’t think it’s anything we can’t handle,” Castle said.

Castle’s tenacious defense was on full display all game long, which was a good sign for the Spurs. However, his offense was nowhere to be seen. While he drained a couple of three-pointers, Castle’s offensive production was subpar, at best. His worst trait, his poor decision-making, came back to haunt him big-time: he committed four turnovers and was not great at playmaking in general. He finished the game with 14 points on 14 shots, four rebounds, four assists, and four turnovers. For a player expected to be the second option on offense, this is simply not enough.

To make matters worse for Castle, he rolled his ankle in the second half of the game as he was coming down from a shot attempt. The Spurs guard left the game temporarily, but he was able to return for the final few minutes. Miscommunication between him and Victor Wembanyama after a Knicks miss with 10 seconds left led to a costly turnover that ultimately ended the game.

The Spurs are no strangers to series comebacks, fighting from a 2-3 series deficit against the Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. However, the Knicks present a unique challenge to this young team. How will the Spurs adjust against a team that seems perfectly designed to stop them on both ends?
