Greg Schiano’s buyout becomes hot topic after Rutgers embarrassing UMass loss puts him squarely on hot seat

On Thursday, Rutgers football suffered a stunning upset loss to UMass 37-21. In the process, UMass ended a prolonged losing streak.

Beyond the numbers, the loss makes the future uncertain for head coach Greg Schiano, per Pete Nakos of On3Sports.com.

Schiano now faces a contract buyout of upwards of $18.5 million. That is the case if he is fired without cause. Additionally, Rutgers would have to pay Schiano 76.85% of his remaining salary biweekly.

Rutgers could pay the buyout if/when Schiano seeks out future opportunities. In 2023, Schiano signed a six-year contract extension that runs until the 2029 season.

Plus, his contract includes a $500,000 raise at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Rutgers Athletic Director Keli Zinn, who was hired in 2025, has expressed an alliance with Schiano.

“You’re not going to see me get in the habit of speaking publicly about specific expectations when you get into wins and losses. I don’t love that,” Zinn recently said, per NJ.com. “Greg and I are on the exact same page with this: I want what he wants and he wants what I want. And what that is, in its simplest form, is to improve what we saw from last year.”

Schiano has become the all-time winningest coach in program history with 99 wins. He held the position from 2001 to 2011, before taking a position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He led them to a winning season in 2006, going 11-2 after starting 9-0.

In 2020, Schiano returned as head coach at Rutgers.

Rutgers will play against Boston College on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6:30 pm CST/7:30 pm EST.
