Serena Williams officially making singles return at Wimbledon

Serena Williams is officially returning to Wimbledon singles competition.

The tournament made the announcement Sunday on X, formerly Twitter, that Williams received a wild card into the ladies’ singles draw for the 2026 Championships. It is her first singles appearance at Wimbledon since her return to professional tennis.

“This is not a drill. Serena Williams will compete in the 2026 ladies’ singles at Wimbledon as a wild card,” Wimbledon posted.

The news ends weeks of speculation surrounding Williams’ plans for the grass-court major. Earlier this month, the 23-time Grand Slam champion declined to commit to a singles return when asked about the possibility of accepting a wild card.

“Oh my Gosh, there’s some left? Would you be interested if I took it? You think I’m ready for singles,” Williams said jokingly. “I need to go to work.”

Williams spent the past several weeks easing back into competition through doubles play. She returned to the WTA Tour at Queen’s Club alongside Victoria Mboko, earning a doubles win in her first match back.

Wimbledon has long been one of Williams’ most successful tournaments. She won seven singles titles at the All England Club and established herself as one of the most accomplished grass-court players in tennis history.

Williams had also already secured a place in the Wimbledon doubles draw alongside her sister, Venus Williams, after the pair received a wild card earlier this month. Serena said the idea originated with her daughter, Olympia.

“Well, I think it’s going to be fun,” Williams had said. “My daughter Olympia told me that I should play with Venus. She’s always right.”

Wimbledon begins June 29.
