Senators rumors: Ottawa in trade market for Stanley Cup Final goalie

Right now, the Ottawa Senators are set at the starting goaltender position thanks to the acquisition of former Boston Bruins starter Linus Ullmark prior to the 2024-25 NHL season. But now, the Senators are said to be in the market for a veteran backup.

According to former NHL goaltender and current Insider Kevin Weekes, the Senators could be interested in former Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner, who was traded in December to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“G Skinner among options for Senators,” Weekes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Skinner, who was taken by the Oilers with the 78th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, was in net for Edmonton for the most part during each of their two recent runs to the Stanley Cup Final. However, at various points in both playoff runs, Skinner faltered and was replaced by Calvin Pickard.

Skinner was traded with Brett Kulak to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the middle of December in return for Tristan Jarry and Sam Poulin, a trade that ultimately didn’t exactly work out for either side. Skinner would start the playoffs with the Penguins and was eventually replaced by Arturs Silovs, while Jarry didn’t start the playoffs in Edmonton, having been outshone by Connor Ingram.

Throughout his NHL career to date, he has compiled a 121-71-23 record, along with a 2.77 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage, and nine shutouts. In the postseason, he owns a 26-25 record with a 2.89 goals-against average, a .892 save percentage, and four shutouts.

His three-year extension worth $7.8 million, which carries an annual salary cap hit of $2.6 million, expires on July 1.
