Royals closer Carlos Estevez’s injury recovery gets crucial update

Kansas City Royals star closer Carlos Estevez has made only one appearance so far this season. Estevez is currently on the IL with a foot injury. The Royals All-Star is working hard to return, and manager Matt Quatraro shared an important update on his recovery ahead of Friday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, via Jaylon T. Thompson.

“#Royals manager Matt Quatraro said closer Carlos Estévez is close to going on a rehab assignment. He threw again on Friday and it was successful. Estévez has missed time due to left foot contusion. He will still need to build up but his return is approaching soon,” Thompson reported on X, formerly Twitter.

Estevez, 33, earned his second career All-Star selection in 2025. It was his first All-Star appearance with the Royals, as his other selection was while he was with the Los Angeles Angels.

In 2025, Estevez pitched to a 2.45 ERA in 67 appearances. He also saved 42 games, a mark that led the league.

Overall, the Royals have endured a difficult 2026 MLB season. At 12-19, the Royals are in last place in the American League Central division. They have missed their All-Star closer without question.

The fact that he is close to going on a rehab assignment is encouraging to say the least. Assuming no setbacks occur, Estevez could return fairly soon. With that being said, there is no official return date for the veteran reliever at the moment.

Kansas City will closely monitor his progress. Updates will continue to be provided as they are made available.
