Liberty’s Breanna Stewart sounds off on costly blown call late in Aces loss

Refereeing in the WNBA appears to be worse than ever, and the events towards the end of the Las Vegas Aces’ 104-99 win over the New York Liberty on Thursday seem to confirm that notion. With the Aces up by just three, 98-95, with around 18 seconds left in the game, A’ja Wilson appeared to turn the ball over, as the ball slipped from her hands as she was driving towards the basket.

The nearest Liberty defender, Jonquel Jones, wasn’t even close to touching the basketball. Nonetheless, the officials decided to give the ball back to the Aces in one of the most egregious calls one will ever see in the sport of basketball.

As expected, Liberty star Breanna Stewart believes that the referees messed up that call and robbed the Liberty of a chance at tying the game. Stewart even mentioned that she believes that Wilson knew that the officials made the wrong decision, as the Aces star was even readying herself to play defense.

“Yeah, I did (think the call was flubbed),” Stewart said, via Liberty beat reporter Myles Ehrlich. “So did A’ja. She was walking back to half court.”

It’s hard to blame Wilson or any Aces player for this disastrous turn of events, as they had nothing to do with that out of bounds decision anyhow. Nonetheless, the Liberty have to feel very shortchanged by this, and it can get very frustrating when things out of one’s control end up being their undoing.

Nonetheless, New York, of course, was down by three at the time, so it’s not like it was a guarantee that they would have tied the game had they gotten the opportunity to do so. But the beauty of sports is getting the chance to try, and in the end, everyone lost, just because the officials’ collective eyesight was rather poor.
