Devastating Ricky Pearsall injury fears force $82.4m receiver move for Super Bowl-hunting 49ers

Deebo Samuel is back.

After one season away, the 30-year-old has returned to the San Francisco 49ers.

Having endured the longest free agency period of his entire NFL career, Samuel’s wait came to an end on Thursday when he agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $7 million with the Niners, per reports.

In his first spell with the Bay Area outfit, Samuel recorded 4,792 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns from 334 targets in six seasons.

Not forgetting to mention that he played an integral part on offense for a Niners team which went to two Super Bowls in 2019 and 2023.

Therefore, his return – who WWE star Bayley called for back in February – should be considered a win-win move for all involved parties.

This is because the former All-Pro wideout gets to continue playing football, while the Niners start to address a depleted area of their offense, amid injury concerns to both Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall.

Training camp has only been in session for a week, and Kirk has already picked up a calf injury, running back Jordan James is out with a fractured rib, and Pearsall is dealing with knee swelling that is a linked to the PCL injury he suffered in 2025.

Still mulling over what to do, there is a chance that if the team decides that its in Pearsall’s best interests to undergo surgery, then he would be sidelined for the entire upcoming season, according to Niners insider for KNBR, Matt Maiocco.

Then, of course, was the shocking news earlier in the week that head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a vehicular collision in mid-July, which is set to see him have limited involvement in preseason preparations.

Add to that that they still have disgruntled wideout Brandon Aiyuk contracted to the team, though he has made his intentions clear that he will never suit up in a Niners uniform ever again.

Just to add even slightly more insult to injury, the team will be without star tight end George Kittle for much of the season with him listed on the PUP list as he continues to mount a recovery from a torn Achilles injury sustained in January.

Samuel fills a void that is only growing bigger

The Niners’ troubles with injuries on offense have been well documented over recent years, with conspiracy theories even surfacing that linked their seeming swarm of injuries each year to a substation that is close in proximity to their training base.

In the offseason, though, San Francisco felt that these injury woes were behind them, splashing big on free agents including Kirk and the big-money signing of six-time Pro Bowler Mike Evans.

But they were met with the exact same issues almost right away, and Samuel – who needed a job – was more than willing to reunite with his former ball club, believing that he has so much more still to give out on the field.

“Going on Year 8 … [I] still feel like I got a lot, at least like three, four good years left,” he said on his YouTube channel in mid-July. “It’s kind of been tough, not even going to lie to you.

“All the free agency stuff going on, waking up in the morning, looking at your phone, seeing if your agent hit you and was like, ‘This team is interested,’ or things along those lines. And it’s been kind of like a roller coaster.

“[I’ve] been through a lot, not just ball. With me and how I play this game, it’s just like, no matter what I’m going through, no matter what I’m doing, if I’m able to perform, I’m going to go out there and put it on the line for my team.”

Amid rumors of a possible retirement following his 2025 campaign with the Washington Commanders in which he racked up 727 yards and six total touchdowns from 72 receptions, Samuel was very quick to shut that down.

“Some people ask like, “Are you ready to hang it up?” And I’m like, ‘Nah, everything’s got timing,’” he added.

“I promise you when the time come, it’s going to come. And I’m overly prepared, overly ready for the moment.

“And whenever that right opportunity show up, we here first, man, and ready to rock out.”

Well, Samuel’s time has come, and it’s back with the team where his pro career first started, and will hopefully also serve as a place where he can get his career back on track.
