What is Cole Palmer’s goal celebration? Origins of Chelsea star’s ‘cold’ pose are from bond with new teammate Morgan Rogers

Cole Palmer struggled last season, but he will hope to be whipping out his trademarked celebration much more this term.

His form since moving to Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023 has helped generate an army of fans with his custom move.

The signature celebration has gone global, appearing in the NBA and being replicated by many other sporting stars.

In fact, it’s so famous that Palmer has actually officially trademarked the celebration, along with the name ‘Cold Palmer’ and his autograph in October 2025.

The Englishman is synonymous with the ‘shiver’ or ‘cold’ pose after scoring, seeing him rub his arms as if feeling the winter weather.

But did he actually create the celebration himself?

Where does Palmer’s goal celebration come from?

Palmer first did his ‘cold’ gesture after scoring two goals in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Luton Town in December 2023.

His former teammate Noni Madueke told TNT Sports after the match: “That’s why they call him ‘Cold Palmer’, innit?”

However, Palmer himself revealed that it was actually a nod to his now-Blues teammate Morgan Rogers.

Rogers, who has joined his friend at Stamford Bridge this summer from Aston Villa, was at the time playing for Middlesbrough and had done the celebration after scoring against West Bromwich Albion.

Palmer admitted: “My boy Morgs did one for Middlesbrough, so I told him I’d do it too if I scored.”

But he then continued his electric goalscoring form in 2024 and soon the celebration became synonymous with him.

Rogers went on to join his close friend in the Premier League after arriving at Villa the following month and the pair shared a pitch when Unai Emery‘s side drew 2-2 with the Blues in April.

He scored his side’s second goal of the game against Chelsea and was accused of copying Palmer when he did the ‘cold’ pose.

However, discussing the moment afterwards, Rogers insisted: “He definitely copied me. It’s my celebration. Check the timeline, I did it first.”

In response, Palmer spoke to talkSPORT in 2024 about who the real owner of the celebration was, saying: “We’ve [him and Rogers] had a chat about this. He knows I did it and it took off.

“Everyone knows it’s my celebration. He [Rogers] might have done it, but everybody knows it’s my celebration.”

Now that Rogers has joined Palmer at Chelsea, the debate seems like it’s going to continue to rumble on.

But Palmer isn’t backing down, and now that he has a trademark on the celebration, he feels it’s solely his now.

Although he has admitted he’s up for doing a combined ‘cold’ move, saying: “I have trademarked the celebration…so if Morgan tries to do anything, bailiffs at his door.

“Jokes aside, we’ll probably do the celebration together.”
