How many Premier League managerial changes have there been this summer?

The Premier League has had a managerial shake-up for next season, with nine clubs making a change in the dugout.

Including the three promoted sides, half the division will have managers competing in the Premier League for the first time with their respective clubs.

Pep Guardiola decided to leave Manchester City at the end of last season after winning 20 major trophies with the side.

The longest-serving manager is now Mikel Arteta, who has served as the Arsenal boss for over six years, and will be the only Premier League-winning manager on the touchline.

Chelsea and Manchester United made big decisions at the end of last season and have spent the summer rebuilding with their new head coaches at the helm.

However, some clubs like Newcastle have lost their manager amid pre-season preparations and have precious time to prepare ahead of the new campaign.

Manchester City – Enzo Maresca

Guardiola’s ten-year reign at City ended ahead of the final day of the 2024/25 season.

Enzo Maresca eventually replaced the Spaniard, having previously spent time at the club as a youth coach.

The Italian manager left Chelsea in hostile circumstances in January following the Blues’ FIFA Club World Cup win, despite having three-and-a-half years left on his contract.

His coaching style has been heavily influenced by Guardiola, and he will want to guide the club through a turbulent transition following the departures of experienced squad members like John Stones, Nathan Ake, and Bernardo Silva.

The 46-year-old has shown he can win trophies despite his relatively short career, having previously guided the Leicester City to the Championship title.

Manchester United – Michael Carrick

After the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Michael Carrick was put in charge of the side on an interim basis.

The 45-year-old made it impossible for the Old Trafford hierarchy not to sign him permanently after securing Champions League football for next season.

Since taking charge in January, Carrick won more points per game (2.29) than any other Premier League manager.

His first full-time managerial role was spent at Middlesborough, where he reached the 2022/23 playoffs and the EFL Cup semi-finals the following year.

He signed a two-year contract to remain as boss in May, with United’s win at Brighton marking his first official game as permanent manager.

Liverpool – Andoni Iraola

Arne Slot was expected to continue as Liverpool head coach after eventually securing Champions League qualification for next season.

However, the Liverpool hierarchy released a statement following a disappointing fifth-place finish, stating: “Change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.”

The Reds decided to appoint Andoni Iraola following his wave of success with Bournemouth, having guided the Cherries to their first-ever European finish last year.

He took his old side on an 18-match unbeaten run to finish in sixth spot, with the Spaniard employing a fast-paced style that heavily relies on athletic players to press and transition.

Similarly to Maresca at City, Iraola joins the Merseyside club at a time of change, with legends like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson having left in the summer.

Chelsea – Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso was chosen by Chelsea as the permanent successor to Liam Rosenior, who was sacked in April only three months after he took over from Maresca.

The Liverpool legend is no stranger to English football but he is now set to begin his Premier League managerial career this season with the Blues.

He made his first-team debut in the dugout at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the club their first-ever Bundesliga title in his first full term in charge without losing a single league game.

A year later, he landed the Real Madrid job, yet failed to replicate his success in La Liga.

Alonso’s tenure lasted only eight months before he stepped down following a difficult run of results, prior to being announced as Chelsea boss for the 2026/27 season.

The 44-year-old saw most of his success come with a back-three formation, and he is expected to revert to that system at Stamford Bridge.

Since arriving at the club, he sanctioned a British-record move for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117million to signal his high ambitions for the upcoming campaign.

Newcastle – Matthias Jaissle

Matthias Jaissle is the man backed to replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle following his shock exit.

Former Bournemouth manager Howe came under pressure after a poor season, seeing Newcastle finish 12th in the Premier League.

Jaissle is a two-time Asian Champions League winner with Al Ahli – a club owned by Saudi Arabia‘s Public Investment Fund, like Newcastle.

Since the 38-year-old arrived in Saudi Arabia, his team has played 138 matches, winning 92, drawing 21, and losing 25.

His tactics have been heavily influenced by the Red Bull coaching model, with his sides built around aggressive high pressing and intense counter-attack.

His coaching style could be ideally suited to Newcastle, who have built a squad around intensity and athleticism.

Bournemouth – Marco Rose

Marco Rose will be Bournemouth’s new head coach next season after Iraola confirmed at the end of the campaign that he was leaving the south coast.

The German spent the majority of his playing career at Mainz 05 under Jurgen Klopp.

He also made his managerial breakthrough at the club as he took over their second team as player/assistant coach in 2010.

Three years later, he became Under-16s head coach at RB Salzburg in Austria before being named head coach of the first team in 2017. 

Rose won back-to-back league titles and did not lose a home match during his two-year tenure.

He returned to Germany and oversaw Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund, securing Champions League at both clubs.

He eventually joined RB Leipzig and won the DFB-Pokal in 2023.

Fulham – Alvaro Arbeloa

Nine years after he last played in the Premier League, Alvaro Arbeloa will return as Fulham’s head coach.

After spending five years at the club, Marco Silva decided not to renew his contract at the London-based club, opting instead for a new challenge at Benfica.

As a player, Arbeloa helped Liverpool reach the Champions League final before winning La Liga, two Copa del Rey trophies and becoming a European champion with Real Madrid.

After retiring, he took charge of Real Madrid’s Under-19s, then their B team, before becoming interim head coach of the seniors in January 2026.

They reached the Champions League quarter-finals and finished second in LaLiga, but he stepped down at the end of the season before signing his contract at Craven Cottage.

Crystal Palace – Pierre Sage

Pierre Sage faces the difficult task of replacing one of Crystal Palace‘s greatest-ever managers in Oliver Glasner.

Sage did not play professional football.

He got his break at Lyon when he was named interim manager of the first team and guided them to Europa League qualification, earning him the job on a permanent basis.

After leaving the club in January 2025, he was appointed at RC Lens that summer. 

He led the club to their first Coupe de France trophy and secured qualification for the Champions League.

The 47-year-old’s success caught the Eagles’ attention following the open vacancy at Selhurst Park.

Nottingham Forest – Oliver Glasner

Forest suddenly announced the departure of Vitor Pereira – despite the club previously intending to extend his contract earlier this summer.

Glasner achieved major success at Palace, delivering trophies in back-to-back seasons.

He secured the south London club their first-ever major trophy by winning the FA Cup in 2025, followed by the Conference League.

However, after his contract expired, he decided not to sign an extension in order to pursue a new challenge.

Though Glasner insisted his decision was made prior to the transfer window, he grew visibly frustrated with the club’s hierarchy over squad management.

He publicly expressed feeling abandoned following the high-profile January sales of club captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City and Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Glasner already seems to be backed financially at Forest following the arrival of talented midfielder Xaver Schlager, whom Glasner previously worked with earlier in his career.
