Red Sox recall infielder after placing Marcelo Mayer on IL
It could be a long time before the Boston Red Sox truly fall out of playoff contention in the uninspiring American League, but a brutal series loss versus the Colorado Rockies sent an ear-splitting message to the fan base. Yes, this team is dealing with injuries, and yes, it has an opportunity to win back-to-back games against the first-place New York Yankees, and yes, its starting pitchers are thriving. But it will take a mighty strong spark to ignite a genuine turnaround. Can Tsung-Che Cheng help light the match?
The Red Sox (33-46) called up the Taiwanese infielder from Triple-A Worcester after placing Marcelo Mayer on the 10-day injured list with a bone stress reaction to the left ulna. It is obviously disappointing to see the former top-five draft pick go down yet again, but he has been struggling. Perhaps a new bat in the lineup and new glove in the diamond can give the squad a vital burst of energy.
Cheng previously played three games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025 before bouncing around MLB this past winter. He was claimed off waivers three times in January, unable to make concrete living arrangements. Boston then snatched him in February and had been keeping him on the WooSox to this point. The 24-year-old left-handed batter finally got to introduce himself to the Fenway Faithful.
He recorded his first career RBI after grounding into a fielder’s choice in the second inning of Friday’s game against the Yankees. Tsung-Che Cheng then notched his first MLB hit after doubling to center field in the fourth, starting his Red Sox debut on a positive note. He has already given the crowd something to smile about.
And that is extremely rare these days.
