Rangers make Andrew McCutchen roster decision after Nicky Lopez signing
The Texas Rangers have reportedly designated veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen for assignment, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Texas signed infielder Nicky Lopez as well.
“Andrew McCutchen is designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers, who sign infielder Nicky Lopez,” Nightengale reported.
The Rangers signed McCutchen in March. It was a minor league deal, so McCutchen needed to make the Opening Day roster. He ultimately earned a spot on the big league roster after spring training.
McCutchen had some big moments with the Rangers, but he struggled overall. The 39-year-old recorded a slash line of .192/.277/.260 across 37 games played with Texas. He added one home run and two doubles.
McCutchen is a respected veteran and he could receive another opportunity with an MLB ball club. One has to imagine at least a few teams would be open to acquiring the former MVP.
The Rangers are in an interesting position overall. While they have underperformed with a 25-29 record, Texas is in third place and only 1.5 games behind the Athletics for first place in the American League West standings. They are also one game behind the Seattle Mariners for second place in the division.
The Rangers are still in contention despite their mediocre performance. They are hoping to find more consistency sooner rather than later.
Texas is set to host the Houston Astros once again on Wednesday night. It will be the third contest of a four-game series between the Texas ball clubs, as the series is currently 1-1. First pitch for Wednesday night’s matchup is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST.
