Rams’ Sean McVay adamant Matthew Stafford can retire on his terms despite Ty Simpson addition
The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft introduced some controversy in the Los Angeles Rams’ camp. Their decision to draft quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th pick was a head-turner for multiple reasons. One of the big reasons why it was a surprise is because the Rams still have reigning MVP Matthew Stafford as their starting quarterback.
While some view the decision to draft Simpson as a long-term play, others aren’t convinced. Some believe that the Rams are preparing to replace Stafford with Simpson as soon as the former’s play drops off. Perhaps Stafford might be forced to retire early after potentially getting benched for the new young quarterback.
Sean McVay allayed these fears. In a press conference after Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Rams head coach stated that Simpson’s time in the league will be dictated by Stafford and his decision to retire.
“But whenever that time comes for him [Simpson] to get an opportunity to be Matthew’s successor will be on Matthew’s terms,” McVay said. “And I think that’s really what the important thing was. And I didn’t want that to ever be misunderstood while not minimizing the excitement for Ty [and] the buy-in.”
After the Rams’ decision to draft Simpson, the cameras caught McVay with a seemingly disappointed look on his face. Many interpreted that, along with his initial reaction in an interview, as a sign that the Rams coach and front office were disconnected when making this pick. McVay has clarified that that isn’t the case.
“And so for any of the questions or misunderstandings just based on my demeanor or disposition last night, I did want to get that out of the way. This is my buddy right here.”
The Rams drafted TE Max Klare in the second round and tackle Keagan Trost in the third. Their next picks will be in the sixth and seventh rounds.
