Rams’ Matthew Stafford opens up about tackling looming end of NFL career

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will enter his 18th season no longer merely as a veteran star trying to extend his career window. After winning his first MVP last year, he is now carrying one of the most compelling second acts the NFL has seen in recent memory.

At 38 years old, Stafford has maintained his focus and sharpness, extending his reputation as one of the league’s most accomplished signal-callers.

After suffering a long list of major injuries, many wrote him off. Stafford, however, slowly worked his way back to the top, including steering the Rams to the Super Bowl title in 2022.

He has nothing else to prove, really. But he is still eager to get on the field, saying his “body feels pretty good.” He, however, admitted on “The Pat McAfee Show” that retirement has been a lingering option.

“Those conversations are a family thing. I talked about those with my wife and my kids. They love watching me play, they want me to keep doing it as long as I feel good and I feel excited about it, which I am,” said the former Comeback Player of the Year.

Stafford added that he has a good chance to win a second championship with the Rams, acknowledging the comfortable position he is in, especially at this point in his colorful career.

“I don’t take that for granted. I spent 12 years in Detroit, and I never got to play some of the games we’re playing in year in and year out now. It’s a whole bunch of fun,” said the three-time Pro Bowler.

“It is something delicate. I gotta navigate the end of it. I’m not sure when that is. I want to be fair to our team, but I also want to be fair to myself and take this thing year to year. But at the same time, I love playing, and I’m excited about this season, for sure.”

He led Los Angeles to a 12-5 record last season. They fell short in the NFC Championship Game against the Seattle Seahawks.
