Wild rumors: Minnesota shuts down Quinn Hughes trade buzz ‘invented BS by bloggers’

Quinn Hughes has had a hectic seven months. He navigated a trade from the Vancouver Canucks to the Minnesota Wild, scored the game-winning goal versus Sweden en route to helping the United States win its first men’s ice hockey Olympics gold medal since 1980, and he then played a massive role in the Wild’s first playoff series victory in 11 years. Now, as the 2024 James Norris Memorial Trophy winner approaches the final season of his contract, he is firmly in the rumor mill.

Because Minnesota may have to commit a record-breaking deal to extend Hughes, there is speculation that the organization could trade him for a haul. His brother Jack’s team has been named as a possible destination. But people may not want to entertain such chatter.

“As the Minnesota Wild continue extension talks with Quinn Hughes, league sources emphatically shot down reports that the Wild have engaged the New Jersey Devils — or any team — in trade talks regarding the superstar defenseman,” Michael Russo of The Athletic writes.

“One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss negotiations that aren’t public, went as far as to tell The Athletic on Tuesday that the rumors are ‘bulls—,’ ‘made up” and ‘invented BS by bloggers.’”

Considering what Hughes has already done for the franchise in the short amount of time he has been in Minnesota, it makes perfect sense for the Wild to lock him up. It will be expensive, though. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman is predicting that Hughes inks a three-year contract that carries an average annual value of $18 million.

The Devils and others squads will surely be ready to pounce if talks break down, but it sounds like Wild fans have no reason to panic right now.
