Raiders add ex-49ers WR ahead of Week 1 opener

The Las Vegas Raiders tabbed Kirk Cousins over Fernando Mendoza to lead their offense behind center. Now head coach Klint Kubiak and company hand him a former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver before Week 1. Ronnie Bell, who also played for the New Orleans Saints, joins the franchise before facing the Miami Dolphins.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the move Thursday along with two more Raider signings.

“Raiders signed former Saints WR Ronnie Bell, former Giants G Evan Neal and former Giants DE Azeez Ojulari to their practice squad,” Schefter posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

Bell helps hand Cousins a veteran in the perimeter room. He’s fresh off catching seven passes for 72 yards for the Saints. He spent his first two seasons with the 49ers and lining up for head coach Kyle Shanahan. Bell caught eight combined passes for the Niners in 2023 and 2024. But he scored three touchdowns in the former campaign.

So the 26-year-old heads to a questionable Raiders receiver room. The franchise didn’t deliver splash NFL Free Agency moves to boost the wideout room. Even with adding both the four-time Pro Bowler Cousins and drafting Mendoza at No. 1 overall this past April. Las Vegas even never signed notable free agent names like Stefon Diggs or Deebo Samuel in the market.

So now they settle on a past three-touchdown performer from Shanahan’s offense. While also playing in Kellen Moore’s system momentarily in the Big Easy. But the Raiders add one more weapon they can throw out against the Dolphins, who turn to their own new coach in Jeff Hafley.
