This pitcher has clearly become Phillies’ X-factor amid playoff push

The Philadelphia Phillies currently lead the National League Wild Card and are only four games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East standings. Philadelphia is on track to make the postseason. Making any serious noise in the playoffs will require a complete team effort, though. Starting pitcher Andrew Painter was demoted earlier this season, but he has emerged as the team’s X-factor since being promoted once again.

Painter, 23, has recorded an overall ERA of 5.55 across 21 total outings (19 starts) this season. However, the right-handed hurler has turned in a 3.12 ERA since returning to the big league ball club in late July, according to MLB Network. The reset in Triple-A was clearly necessary, and he looks like a different pitcher now.

Andrew Painter’s immense impact on Phillies

Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler and Jesus Luzardo are leading the starting rotation. They receive most of the attention. Aaron Nola has endured a challenging campaign, but he is a veteran with a proven track record. Painter also being in the rotation — and performing well — changes the dynamic of the pitching staff.

Without Painter pitching well, the Phillies have serious starting pitching questions outside of Sanchez, Wheeler and Luzardo. Painter performing well gives the team a fourth option to rely upon, which will be of the utmost importance in the postseason.

Andrew Painter may not be the best pitcher on the team, but he is a difference-maker. He has certainly emerged as the X-factor. The Phillies will benefit without question if he continues to pitch well.
